Story Telling is what all film-makers and producers are using as the latest buzz-words. It varies from year to year, but lately, I’ve heard everyone saying, “It’s all about the story.” I sift through hundreds of hours of footage each week looking for the small details that will make a short film worth watching. From various events, to documentaries, to the occasional testimony, people are naturally built to tell stories of their life. Not all stories are worth rolling out the red carpet and producing, but there is the occasional story that makes your head spin with curiosity.
By selecting the different parameters for their tracks, creativity and ideas flood the brain as you listen to different tracks and start matching camera shots and movements to the track.
I was at a family reunion this past weekend and one of my uncles was sharing a story about how he is fixing up and old airplane that used to go on bombing missions during WWII. The history of the plane, the writing on the inside hull, and the value of the aircraft is what caught my attention. It wasn’t the propellers, the guns, or even the engines. It was the scribbling on the turret that the operator left because he thought he was going to get shot down. That is where the story is.
However, not all stories come naturally, and if you are looking for a script to produce, don’t want to pay royalties for a pre-made script, and have zero ideas where to start, I have found a simple solution for generating an idea. A simple place to start is by listening to sound tracks. Take musicbed.com for example. By selecting the different parameters for their tracks, creativity and ideas flood the brain as you listen to different tracks and start matching camera shots and movements to the track. Before long, you start adding words to those shots, and if you are really motivated, you organize those thoughts into a script, and wha-la, a move script is born.
This does require some time to figure out how the story goes together, but it does work. I have done this many times before when I was in a lull for ideas. Music is very inspiring and when you have found a good sound track, the story will follow.
